Buying and Selling Websites
One of the oldest ways of making money online is the simple buying and selling of websites.
This can really be split into two parts:
- You Buy a Website Name that has not already been registered and then Sell it to a Company or Business that wants it.
- You buy a website that has already been created by someone and you redesign or flip it and then sell it to make a profit.
Now the first option is the only one we will be talking about here as you don’t have to do any website building at all. You simply register a domain name that no one else has thought of yet and sell it.
Of course the idea is to get a really catchy name like SimpleWebsiteNames.com or MyWebsite.com.
There is literally an infinite combination of website names available however you should never make a website name too long. 1-4 words is ideal and it is best if you don’t use any dashes but sometimes these can still fetch a lot of money.
You should also be aware that domain names often sell in the millions with the most expensive domain name ever to be sold being sex.com at a cool $14 million.
Now when the internet was new you could easily buy common domain names as not many people had registered many names yet. However nowadays most of the easy names are already taken. This is not to say that this method of making money online is finished however. You just have to be a little more creative these days.
If you don’t already know a website name is called a domain name. Now to get your own website or domain name you must first check if it is available so you can register it.
If it is available you can register it from a domain registry for a yearly fee. The prices vary depending on the registry you are using and the type of the domain.
The main domain types are .com / .org / .net / and .info.
Normally .info domains will be the cheapest. The .net and .org will cost around the same price and the .com website will be the most expensive. To make money with this strategy you should always be going after .com websites.
Of course they are not really that expensive and you should never pay more than $12US for a yearly fee of a .com website. The cheapest we have found is $7.49US for a .com website per year.
Then once you have a domain name that you think that someone else may want, you register it. You don’t need to build a website on your registered domain name and you can even request from your domain registry to advertise that you want to sell your domain and at what price. This way if anyone ever searches for your website name they will see a message saying this domain is for sale and you can provide your email address.
This is really an easy way to make money online however you should do some research before you go and register 100 domain names just because you like the sound of them.
The best way to approach this is to find an existing company that has a really bad website name. If you can register a better one and then propose to sell it to them you may have a better chance at making a sale than simply registering a domain name and then hoping someone finds your site.
